Job strategies - TOP 7 strategies

When you are looking for job you need to just understanding these key points. These points could be critical to your job hunting strategy. They will tell how to present yourself for maximum results and what its not a right thing at all.

TOP 7 strategies

1. Network, Network and Network

Most positions are filled through employee referrals. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your friends and professional network to ask for help in landing a job. This is the most efective way in these days and I am pretty sure, that this would be working in future too :)

2. Build a solid and strong resume
Fill in gaps, don’t be a copycat of others CVs. Be specific, truthful, and ensure there are no spelling or grammatical errors. You will be suprised how many people are rejected because grammatical errors.

If you are graduate, don’t create the same CV as every other student. If you don’t have enough experience, just add more information about your bachelor/master thesis. Describe what you did and basically mentioned everything that is connected with the job that you are looking for.

Imagine that recruiter is going to getdozens of the same CVs from your school mates and why he should to pick you, if everybody is “offering” the same information in the CV. Be unique! But don’t use some party photo in CV. You will get the attention, but still you are not going to get invitation for interview.

3. Understand your career goals
Have a clear idea why you are looking and what role you are looking. If you are interested about any role and your only motivation is money, you can just kill your future opportunity for this emplyer forever! Every company is using ATS and your profile will be there with the note “Only motivated by the money” and you just cause your carrer lots of trouble.

4. Be prepared

Research the company and role. Write down questions you wish to ask during the interview. If you don’t have time to do a reasearch and learn something about company, don’t even go to for the interview. You are losing your and theirs time.

5. Listen and engage

Don’t just talk in the interview. Some people are sharing too much information and the recruiter is not even able to stop this candidate.

6. Don’t bad-mouth your previous employers.

Remember it is a small world, so never bad-mouth your employer. Ask yourself, are you going to hire employee who is telling bad things about his current employer? When he will be leaving your company he will be telling the same story about you. So are you ready for this „hire“?

7. Be realistic.

Be honest about what you can realistically offer to a new employer. Don’t lie. I know it's tempting to apply for a more challenging and prestigious role. But if you are working as a Junior Developer there is no way how you get a job as a IT Director. Don’t kill your chance with the wrong application. Lots of people don't get it, but when they are applying on different roles in one time at one company (Project Manager, Tester, IT Director, Designer, Technical Support….) they are creating a bad impression and when they apply on the the position that is fit for them, recruiters are going to reject this person, because they think about this candidate that is not a good fit for the company. Sometimes shooting for the stars really does not pay off!.

Top 5 common mistakes that job seekers make:

1. Showing up late

Nobody likes waiting so, are you sure, that your first impression will be „Hey, I am sorry, but I am late!“

2. Poor presentation
With today’s casual environments (casual Fridays in companies), people think they can dress casual and present themselves that way. Well the first impression is everything, so be sure, that you make a good impression.

3. Too much information on Facebook

Sharing is caring, but not if you are looking for a job! Don’t rely on privacy settings to keep your personal information safe and secure. Recruiters are checking not only LinkedIn, but we are also using Google, Facebook, Twitter etc. So your best bet is to assume everything (yes everything) will be seen by a potential employer. So check your FB which information is public and clean up your content and edit your pictures accordingly.

4. Not answering the question directly

If you are recruiter and you are reading this, you probably agree with me, that if the candidate is evading the question is probably the worst thing during the interview. And trust me, you are not leaving a positive impression.

5. Lack of energy/enthusiasm

People need to have a spark and show the desire. If your motivation is only the money, you don’t have to be a fotune teller, but you already know that there is 98% chance that you are going to be rejected.

I know, that looking for a job can often be challenging so I wish you good luck!
